Building the Roof and Installing Ventilation

For a coop with a 4-foot width, the rafter length will be slightly over 2 feet considering the pitch. Cut a birdsmouth joint at the bottom of each rafter to fit securely onto the top plates. Install rafters every 24 inches along the length of the coop.

Once the rafters are in place, cover them with plywood sheathing. Use 1/2-inch exterior plywood, leaving a slight overhang (eave) to protect the walls from rain. Adding Doors, Nesting Boxes, and Roosting Bars

Install a human access door on one of the walls. The door should be large enough for you to enter and clean easily, perhaps 3 feet wide and 5 feet tall. Use exterior-grade plywood for the door, hinge it to the frame, and add a latch that is secure and easy to operate. For the chickens, a pop hole of about 12 inches wide and 12 inches high at the bottom of another wall will allow access to an attached run. This pop hole should have a sliding or hinged door that can be closed at night for safety.

Nesting boxes can be built onto the outside of the coop or placed inside. A simple design is a box about 12 inches cubed, with a small lip at the front to keep bedding inside, and a roof that can be lifted for easy egg collection. Provide one nesting box for every 3-4 hens. Place them in a darkened, quiet area of the coop, and line them with straw or wood shavings.

Roosting bars are essential for chickens, as they prefer to sleep on elevated perches. Use 2×2 lumber, rounded at the edges if possible, to provide a comfortable grip.
